1. Abridged Problem Statement
Given an M×N grid (1≤M≤70, 1≤N≤7) with some cells blocked (‘*’) and some empty (‘.’), place the fewest 1×2 or 2×1 dominoes on empty cells so that
- no two dominoes overlap, and
- after placement there is no pair of adjacent empty cells left (i.e. you cannot place another domino).
Output the minimum number of dominoes needed.

2. Detailed Editorial

We want a minimum-cardinality *maximal* matching on the graph whose vertices are empty cells and whose edges join orthogonally adjacent empty cells. A maximal matching is one to which no more edges can be added—equivalently, after placing those dominoes, there are no two adjacent uncovered empty cells left.

Brute force on all matchings is impossible. Instead, observe N≤7 is small, so we can do a row-by-row DP with a bitmask window covering two consecutive rows (2×N cells, up to 14 bits). We process cells in row-major order, maintaining a DP state:
dp[mask] = minimum dominoes placed so far, where `mask` (2N bits) encodes for the last 2 rows, at each of the N columns, whether that cell is already “unavailable” (either blocked by a candle or covered by a placed domino) (bit=1) or still “free” (bit=0).

Sliding the window by one cell each step, we do:
- Shift `mask` left by 1 bit, dropping the oldest bit, to bring in the current cell’s status as the low bit.
- If current cell is blocked (‘*’), we must set the new low bit to 1 (unavailable).
- If it’s empty:
  a) We can leave it uncovered: set new low bit to 0.
  b) Place vertical domino with the cell above (if above exists in the previous row and bit there was 0): this sets both bits to 1, cost+1.
  c) Place horizontal domino with the cell to the left (if we are not at column 0 and the just-shifted low bit was 0): set both bits to 1, cost+1.

However, to ensure *maximality*, we must never allow any two adjacent free cells to “escape” out of our 2-row window without being covered or blocked. As soon as a cell leaves the window (i.e. we have processed more than 2N cells in a row-major scan), we look at the pair(s) it forms with its right neighbor or its below neighbor (where applicable). If both were free (bits=0) in our updated mask, that would correspond to an uncovered adjacent pair that we are no longer tracking—so that DP branch is invalid. We enforce this check at every shift.

At the very end, after all cells are processed, we scan all surviving masks. We only accept those masks in which there is no remaining adjacent free pair in the final window rows (horizontal or vertical). Among those, we take the minimum dp value.

Time complexity: O(M·N·2^(2N)·constant) ≲ 70·7·2^14 ≃ 8·10^6, fits in 0.25s.

5. Compressed Editorial
We need a minimum-size maximal matching (an edge-dominating set) on the grid of empty cells. Since N≤7, use a rolling bitmask DP over a 2×N window (2N bits). Process the grid in row-major order, shifting the mask by 1 each cell. For each empty cell, either leave it free, place a vertical domino (covering it and its above neighbor), or place a horizontal domino (covering it and its left neighbor); for a candle cell, mark it unavailable. After each shift, drop states that would let an uncovered adjacent pair “escape” the window. Finally, among remaining masks check that no adjacent free cells remain in the last window, and take the minimum cost. Time ≃ O(M·N·2^(2N)).
